Internet surfers can access a comprehensive and integrated website of the Sharjah International Airport from
today. The site was launched yesterday for users of the airport and other interested clients. "We are happy
to release our own server-based Internet services over the domain shj-airport.gov.ae," said a top official.
The indigenously developed website costing some Dhs. 350,000, will serve the users as a one-stop-site where one
can easily access all related sites without actually switching on to another site. Dr. Sridhar, Director, Management
Information Services Department, MIS at Sharjah International Airport, the brain behind the creation of the website
with the help of a dozen highly skilled computer engineers and staff has developed the site based on the distributed
data processing, DDP, concept, which will enable the user to download pictures and information quicker than other
web sites.
Dr. Sridhar is happy that he could complete the project ahead of the scheduled time. Originally the launch was
to be done during September this year. "We are happy that we could launch over 100-pages website well ahead
of the target date, which is September this year," Dr. Sridhar said. The announcement about the launch of
the site was made when the airport opened its refurbished first and |
executive class lounges at the Sharjah International Airport in June this year.
The site has some 100 quality pictures, around 25 animations. "We have put in a lot of efforts to design and
create our website. Any information users of the airport may require can be obtained at the click of the mouse,"
he said. On-line statistics, flight information, consignee information, weather forecast, A to Z worldwide airfreight
directory, link to customs, other government departments, hotels and on-line booking facilities have also been
provided at the site.
The website carries extensive details about the emirate of Sharjah, map, vital factors like economy, population,
climate, tourism, entry rules and all other related general information.
The website also has a foreword from Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Thani, Chairman of the Department of Civil
Aviation for the Government of Sharjah.
Meanwhile, cabling is being carried out at the airport for the installation of computers in the main lounge of
the airport to provide passengers with Internet and e-mail access, according to Dr. Sridhar. Already Internet and
e-mail facilities are available in the first and business class lounges at the airport. |
