Software developed in the United Arab Emirates may soon be used in the United States and Europe to make airports more efficient.
Sharjah Airport Auhtority (SAA) has developed a series of applications using INFORMIX-OnLine, 4GL, RDS, 4GL ID and SQL, which it currently uses on a daily basis to keep the busy airport ticking.
"It is extremely reliable package," said Dr S. Sridhar, manager of information services at SAA, who added: "We originally decided to develop in-house applications because we could not find any single package that could comprehensively handle our entire operation because airport handling is a very dedicated field. Our application is designed to grow with the increasing needs of the airport operations."
Sharjah International Airport is recording fast growth and is used by more than 160 airlines and employs more than 3,000 personnel.
Using the Informix suite of products, Sharjah Airport has developed a total airport handling application which includes flight information system, flight operations systems, financial
accounting system, purchase and stock |
system plus a
cargo system with separate modules for handling imports and exports. The application also helps keep track of ramp services, cargo operations and aircraft movement at the airport besides performing flight information and flight reporting tasks.
Mr Pratap Chudasama, managing director of Infodata, is highly appreciative of the SAA applications. "Informix in the UK were very impressed with the proposal that we submitted and it has gone on to the States. In the near future Sharjah Airport Authority may well be an Informix partner, selling applications to other airports around the globe. That would be a unique achievement for SAA."
SAA reconfirmed its commitment to Informix with Dr Sridhar emphasising: "We have put a lot of energy and invested a lot time in developing packages using Informix and that is where the majority of our development has been done. We are extremely confident about our applications that we have developed using Informix and that is the reason that we are trying to market it to other airports."
