New interactive website for Sharjah airport

Service to be online in 5 months
SHARJAH International Airport has announced the introduction of a 24-hour interactive Internet service which will be fully online in five months.

Making the announcement, Dr Ghanem Al Hajri, Director General, Sharjah International Airport, said the service is exclusive and unique to the region.

"This system will provide more service-related information which will benefit passengers, airlines, cargo agents as well as the general public," he said.

Currently, the airport has a 10 page website (http://www.shj-apt.com) which will be enhanced to 100 pages, he added.

The difference between now and the near future is that from just browsing capabilities, the new site will enable a more proactive interchange between user and information available.

"For example, people abroad can check, through the manifests, if their cargo consignment has reached or if their elderly parents travelling on their own have arrived in Sharjah, or what the weather is like in the UAE," he explained.

People would also be able to make bookings on airlines linked to the website, he added.

The new service, which has cost the airport Dhs 500,000 initially, will focus on airport operational information such as flight arrivals and departures, airline
activities such as bookings, pre-flight manifest, lost and found tracing, flight statistics, cargo agents, cargo statistics, weather reports, hotel and car hire, tourism, cultural programmes, and channelled information for clients.

"Up-do-date information on the latest developments through our Internet service will be provided for both the local and international Press," Dr Hajri added.

The link-up with the website will be free for airlines, unless they wanted to advertise, he said.

The information will be stored confidentially and will be accessible via a security coding or password for authorised users.

General information will be available to all Internet users.

Some of the features available are selling of advertising space, revenue-based services, website for airlines, cargo agents and other related bodies, on-line advertisement on the Internet for customers, email facility with customers domain addresses, website design for customers, on-line application and training on Internet for customers.

Ten monitors will be installed at the airport at different locations for the convenience of international passengers to use Internet and utilise the email facility, said Dr. S. Sridhar, the airport’s director of information technology.
